Choosing a Swimming Pool

Swimming is a fun, low-impact activity that provides an excellent workout. It improves endurance and strengthens muscles and bones for a healthy body. It can also help lower blood pressure, reduce weight and improve heart and lung health. This form of exercise has less impact on the joints and is a great choice for people with arthritis, back problems or other physical limitations. It is also an ideal form of exercise for children and seniors.

While swimmers may be quiet about a mediocre pool, they are often quite vocal about a great one. They will go out of their way to swim in a clean, well maintained, attractive facility that provides an experience that they look forward to.

The Federation Internationale de la Natation (FINA, the International Swimming Federation) sets minimum standards for competition pools: 25 or 50 m long and at least 1.35 m (4 ft) deep. In addition, these pools must be indoors to enable year-round use and make it easier to comply with rules on water temperature, lighting and automatic officiating equipment.

If you’re planning a backyard pool, think about how it will be used and whether your family will grow or change. If you have young children, you might want to consider a pool that has a designated shallow end, as this will make it safer for them to play in the water. Also, consider the size of your backyard and whether you will have enough space to accommodate a pool of any size.
