A swimming pool, also called a bathing pool or simply a pool, is a body of water intended for recreational use. They can be found indoors or outdoors, inground or above ground and in many shapes and sizes. The largest pools are built inside a building, such as a natatorium, and may contain additional facilities for related activities. A pool is also a part of a recreational complex or resort, and can be surrounded by decking, coping, waterfalls, fountains, waves and other features.
A pool can be heated to increase the temperature and reduce the cost of maintaining the water. This is especially important in areas with cold climates or where the pool is used for competitions. A cover is typically attached all winter, and can be custom designed to stop leaf debris and animals from entering the pool. When properly installed, these covers also protect people and small children from falling in the pool.
A pool can be covered with a bubble cover to prevent heat loss overnight, or with a vinyl cover that is much thicker and has a longer lifespan. A liquid cover is another option that uses a microscopically thin layer of nontoxic chemical (such as cetyl alcohol) to sit on the surface of the water and decrease evaporation, which accounts for a large portion of pool heating costs.
